I was never fond of the Schlesinger ROH production. A little OTT for me. Iām probably one of the few that enjoyed the Carsen production. It was interesting to have seen the production at ROH and the Met. Two very different houses. Different experience of the same production. I think I would have enjoyed this production. Looking forward to Elektra in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year. š„š
Wish Iād seen this production, but delighted you did ( for your readers ! ). happy New Year, dear Hugh, and continue your wonderful Operalogues ! Gillian šš¾šš„³
Ha! My review of the Antwerp version wasnāt as positive but Waltz has clearly rethought a lot of it - I donāt remember the young Leitmetzerin for example - and the cast was better all round!
I enjoyed it much more than in Antwerp - the more glamorous frocks helped but I think the direction was deeper and more detailed than before. Even with (some) modern costumes, you were never in doubt tha this production respected the traditions of Strauss & Hofmannsthalās comic masterpiece! Happy New Year to you, Josepha š¾š„xxx
Based on Hugh's review, it seems a shame that the ROH rejected this production. And any show with Matthew Rose as Ochs and Maria Bengtsson as the Marschallin sounds unmissable to me!

I didnāt dislike it and I too saw it at both Covent Garden & the Met. I think itās a hard show to revive though with different singers, and RenĆ©e Fleming - who really moved me in this production as never before - has, I think, now retired her.Marschallin. Happy New Year, Robert š„š¾š
